What is hydronic central heating?
Hot water, silently circulated through every room.
Hydronic central heating warms your home by circulating hot water through a closed loop of pipework — either embedded in the floor, feeding wall-mounted radiators, or running heated towel rails — releasing radiant warmth into each space without fans, ducts or moving air.
A single energy source (a gas boiler or an electric heat pump) heats the water once, and the system distributes it silently throughout the home. Each space can be independently controlled. Because the heat is radiant rather than blown, the result feels fundamentally different from ducted air: even floor-to-ceiling temperature, no draughts, no dust circulation, no fan noise.
Hydronic is widely considered the most premium heating system available for residential homes. It pairs naturally with stone floors, polished concrete, and considered architecture.

Hydronic isn’t the right answer for every project. Tight renovation budgets, homes without thermal envelope upgrades, or rentals are typically better served by ducted systems. We’ll tell you honestly at the consultation — the wrong system in the wrong home is no one’s idea of a good outcome.

A hydronic system can run any combination of three distribution methods, chosen room by room to match how each space is used. Most premium installs combine all three.
Premium for new builds
Hydronic underfloor
Pipework embedded in the slab or screed, turning the entire floor into a low-temperature radiator. Exceptional with stone, tile, polished concrete and engineered timber. Best installed during new builds or major renovations.
Designer wall-mounted
Hydronic radiators
Modern designer radiators from Runtal, Zehnder and DeLonghi — slim, flat-panel, vertical or sculptural. Common in heritage homes and renovations where retrofitting underfloor isn’t viable.
Bathroom essential
Heated towel rails
Hydronic radiators in the bathroom — dual-purpose, warming the room and drying towels through Melbourne’s damp winter months. Always paired with underfloor in premium bathrooms.

Heat source · Gas or electric
Gas boiler or heat pump? Both right, for different homes.
Gas boilers have been the traditional Melbourne hydronic energy source for decades. Modern condensing boilers from Bosch, Vaillant and Baxi run at 90%+ efficiency, heat water rapidly, and integrate cleanly with existing gas services. Subject to current Victorian gas policy — existing owner-occupied homes can replace; new homes requiring planning permits since 1 January 2024 cannot have new gas connections.
Air-source heat pumps are the modern electric alternative — running hot water using the same heat-pump technology that powers reverse-cycle air conditioning, optimised for water. Daikin Altherma, Sanden, Stiebel Eltron and Reclaim Energy are the standards. Highly efficient (3–4 kW of heat per kW of electricity), aligned with Victorian policy direction, and naturally paired with rooftop solar. For new builds in Victoria, heat pump is now the default specification.

How we install hydronic central heating
Premium installation isn’t about the unit alone — it’s the work around it.
Hydronic isn’t a swap-in installation. It’s a designed system, and the design is where premium results come from. Here’s how a Smart Climate hydronic install actually runs.

Site visit & specification
We measure the home, assess insulation and thermal envelope, look at floor build-ups for underfloor, and propose a system sized correctly. Hydronic is sensitive to undersizing — we calculate against actual heat loss, not assumptions.
ii.
System design
Heat source location, flow and return runs, manifold positions, zone layout, radiator sizing and placement, underfloor circuit design. This stage matters more than the brand choice.
iii.
Trade & build coordination
For new builds and major renovations, we work alongside the architect, builder, electrician and plumber. Underfloor in particular is coordinated with slab pours, screed layers and floor finishes.

Pipework installation
All pipework installed by licensed plumbers, pressure-tested, and documented for future reference. Underfloor circuits are pressure-tested before slab pour or screed cover.
v.
Outdoor unit placement
Considered for airflow, drainage, neighbour acoustics, and how it reads from gardens and outdoor living areas.
vi.
Clean handover
Site cleaned. Controller and app paired. You’re walked through how to run the system properly — including the zoning logic — not handed a manual.

What’s the difference between hydronic central heating and ducted gas heating?
Ducted gas pushes warm air through ducts and vents — fast, responsive, slightly noisy, dries the air. Hydronic circulates hot water through underfloor pipes or radiators — silent, even, slower to warm up, no air movement. Hydronic is widely considered the more premium answer; ducted gas is more responsive and less expensive to install. Both are valid for different homes.
Can I retrofit hydronic to an existing home?
Yes — radiators retrofit well into existing homes. Underfloor is more challenging in an existing build (the floor needs to come up) but can be done during a major renovation. Heritage homes in Toorak and Hawthorn frequently mix retrofitted radiators downstairs with limited underfloor in renovated bathrooms.
Should I choose a gas boiler or a heat pump?
For existing homes with established gas: both work. Gas heats water faster; heat pump is more efficient long-term and aligns with Victorian policy direction. For new builds in Victoria, heat pump is now the required specification.
How fast does hydronic warm up?
Slower than ducted air. Underfloor systems take hours to bring a home up to temperature from cold — but once at temperature, they hold beautifully and use little energy to maintain. Most owners run hydronic on schedules rather than on-demand.
Does hydronic heating also cool?
No — hydronic is heating only. For cooling, we’d specify a separate system: typically ducted refrigerated or split system, depending on the home. Some premium builds run hydronic for heating and ducted refrigerated for cooling — the gold standard configuration.
Is hydronic worth the cost?
For the right home, yes — and it adds genuine resale value. For tight budgets or homes that aren’t well-insulated, ducted systems deliver better value per dollar. We’ll tell you honestly at the consultation.
Will it work in my heritage home?
Almost always, yes — radiators retrofit cleanly into period homes without disturbing original features, and designer radiator ranges complement heritage interiors rather than fighting them. Underfloor can be added to renovated bathrooms.
Is hydronic better for allergies or asthma?
Many people find so. Because hydronic doesn’t move air, it doesn’t circulate dust, pollen or particulates. Owners with respiratory sensitivities frequently report a meaningful difference. We can’t make medical claims, but the air-handling difference is real.
How long does installation take?
A full hydronic install for a typical Melbourne home runs one to three weeks depending on scope — underfloor coordinated with the build program, radiators retrofitted room by room. We work to the architect or builder’s schedule on new builds and renovations.
What’s the lifespan and maintenance?
Hydronic pipework lasts 50+ years. Boilers and heat pumps typically last 15–25 years. Annual servicing of the heat source is recommended; the distribution system itself is essentially maintenance-free.
